The entire North American continent was separated by a vast interior seaway that stretched from Texas up through Canada. Kansas has some spectacular fossils from this period, around 80 million years ago. Gigantic marine reptiles like plesiosaurs, mosasaurs & turtles were at the top of the food chain, rivaled by predatory fish. The seas were full of bony fish & sharks while the skies were alive with birds & pterosaurs. The only animal still alive in Kansas today in this picture is the gar, lurking near the water's surface.
