‘Stylindon’, © Ray Troll, 2004

A skull of this crazy-looking black bear-sized mammal was found by two guys who stopped on a Colorado roadside to relieve themselves. Not far away, in the town of Castle Rock, Colorado, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science found evidence of a fossilized tropical rainforest. Stylinodon belonged to a group of mammals known as the taeniodonts that rapidly evolved after the disappearance of the dinosaurs. It probably used its massive, blunt teeth, powerful front limbs, and sharp claws to dig for roots and grubs. This is another one of the bizarre critters Ray found to be a true delight. In this composition he compares a cast of his daughter’s teeth with Stylinodon’s. — Kirk Johnson. RT
