Ammonites
cruised the ancient oceans for some 330 million years through several mass extinctions. These critters were mollusks with protective armor and an ability to control their buoyancy &, therefore, their depth in the sea. They also were equipped with beaks which they used to crush hard shelled denizens of the ocean floor. Some ammonites were enormous-at least one was ten feet long. Shell fragments found in Sweden indicate that some might have reached thirty feet!
