Brad Matsen has been writing about the ocean and its inhabitants for forty years, collaborating with Ray Troll on Shocking Fish Tales (1993); Planet Ocean: A Story of Life the Sea, and Dancing to the Fossil Record (1994); Raptors, Fossils, Fins, and Fangs (1996); and Rapture of the Deep (2004).
He is also the author of Death and Oil: A True Story of the Piper Alpha Disaster on the North Sea (2011); Jacques Cousteau: The Sea King (2009); Descent: The Heroic Discovery of the Abyss, which was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in 2006; the New York Times bestseller Titanic’s Last Secrets (2008); Go Wild in New York City (2005); the award-winning Incredible Ocean Adventure series for children (2003); Reaching Home: Pacific Salmon, Pacific People with Tom Jay and Natalie Fobes (1994), and many other books.
He was creative producer for the Shape of Life, an eight-hour National Geographic television series on evolutionary biology, and has written on marine science and the environment for Mother Jones, Audubon, Natural History, and many other magazines.

His coverage of depleted marine resources for Mother Jones, "Blues In the Key of Sea," created with Ray Troll, won the Project Censored Award as one of the world’s ten most under-reported stories of 1999. His essays have been included in Book of the Tongass, part of the Literature for a Land Ethic series; the Smithsonian Institution’s Ocean Planet; Salmon in the Trees; and other anthologies. Brad earned a Bachelor of Arts in Literature from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and a Master of Fine Arts in Fiction from the University of California, Irvine.

 He has lectured and taught internationally, and has also worked as a commercial fisherman, charter pilot, and merchant seaman. He lives in Port Townsend, Washington with his sweetheart, Barbara Manchester, and his poodle, Lucky.
